Westmill Organics is Stopping its Vegetable Box scheme

Written by Pete Richardson. Posted in Latest News

It is with regret that I write to tell you that Westmill Organics is stopping, with immediate effect, its veg box delivery scheme. This week, beginning 18 July, will be your last delivery.

Over the last few months of looking at the economics of running a small box scheme, even with cutting back expenditure to the basics and keeping the boxes affordable, I have realised the local delivery part of the business is unsustainable.

I am sorry that I will not be able to continue to do this after successfully bringing organic vegetables to your homes for nearly 20 years. The good news is that I shall continue growing organic vegetables at Westmill and selling them wholesale to shops, restaurants and pubs, as well as for other box schemes (see below).

And for those of you living locally, we will continue to stock our Veg Hut with £1-a-bag selections of vegetables to collect by the gate at Westmill Farm, so please pop in whenever you can.

Here are some of the other places where you can buy or eat our delicious organic veg:

Bloomfields, Shrivenham, High street

Swindon Pulse Wholefoods, Curtis Street, Swindon

Cultivate, Oxford (Veg van and farmers’ markets)

The Royal Oak, Bishopstone (Organic pub)

The Chop House, Wood Street, Old Town, Swindon

I also hope you will continue to support the organic veg box concept. Below is as list of other local organic veg box suppliers you may wish to consider. These box schemes will be buying some of their produce from us at Westmill–and all of them are local, independent businesses:

North Aston Organics (Oxford Area) – Tel: 01869 347702

Coleshill Organics (Swindon and villages) – Tel: 01793 861070

Purton House Organics (Swindon area) – Tel: 01793 772287

I am sorry for such short notice in finishing the service here at Westmill, and would appreciate it if you can settle up your final invoice as soon as possible. Please be in contact with the office if you are in any doubt as to how much you owe.

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for your custom over the years and wish you well in sourcing other suppliers so you can continue to get the enjoyment and health benefits of tasty, organic vegetables.

With my very best wishes,

Pete Richardson Proprietor and Organic Grower, Westmill Organics

Meet Westmill Organics’ New Office Manager!

Bev

Beverly Lindsell, Westmill Organics’ new Office Manager

A warm Westmill welcome to Beverley Lindsell, our new Office Manager!

Bev officially takes over the role this week from Rebecca, who is sadly moving out of the area with her family. But you’ll still hear from Rebecca, as she’ll be helping out with our email communications.

With previous experience in administrative and managerial positions, Bev will be responsible for all administration and office management activities at Westmill Organics. She will also be the first point of contact for any questions or queries, and is more than happy to explain our procedures.

Bev has lived locally for many years with her husband and 10-year-old daughter, and is thrilled to take on such an exciting role—particularly as she has a keen interest in food and the environment. Bev has already helped with delivery of boxes over the last few weeks, so some of you may have met her already, but I am sure you’ll all join us in welcoming her on board.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to personally thank Rebecca for all her hard work and patience over the last year, and wish her and family the very best of luck with the move.

Don’t Drive on the Grass!

Written by Pete Richardson. Posted in Latest News

IMG_3517Lots of cold hands out here today, picking fresh organic veg for this week’s boxes! With the challenges of mud and frost (and occasionally snow and ice!), it’s fair to day that getting veg out of the ground at this time of year is not always easy. But, thankfully, we’re not underwater like some unfortunate growers we know.

Although the mud (and cold and rain!) can be a bit of a pain, a real concern for organic farmers and growers at this time of year is the risk of soil compaction.

Excessive trampling the land and (particularly) driving heavy machinery like tractors over the soil is a real no-no when the land is so wet. It destroys the soil’s porous structure, limits air and water penetration, prohibits root penetration, and generally plays havoc with the delicate soil ecosystem–leading to limited availability of plant nutrients, greater disease risk, reduced crop yields, and so on.

While we have to walk the fields in order to harvest the crops, we NEVER drive machinery on the veg fields and always keep to hard roads and existing tracks when bringing the organic veg in from the fields. Unfortunately, the gateways and tracks (pictured) inevitably suffer in the wet…!
